Entrevistamos a Pamela Clare

Pues seguid leyendo:

1. When did you decide to write your first novel? And what made you write romance?

I knew by the time I was about 10 or so that I wanted to write fiction. I found books to be magical. Once I started reading, the entire world disappeared. When I finished a book, part of it stayed with me. I thought that was the most amazing thing! I wanted to be able to do that for people — to write stories that would carry them away and stay with them. And that was as a child.
I read my first romance at about age 14, and I knew right then that I would want to write romance. I like the happy endings and the focus on women’s lives and women’s fulfillment that these stories have.

2. Can you tell us about the process you had to follow in order to publish your first novel?

It was actually very simple compared to the path most authors take. I wrote a book. When I was done, I sent out query letters to five agents, and one of them signed me. She asked for some revisions on the story, which I did in three weeks. About nine months later, she sold the book. I think it’s much more common for an author to have many books sitting in drawers and on shelves before she writes the one that finally sells. But for me, I just wrote that one. I did get some rejections — four of the five agents I queried had no interest, and most of the publishers turned down my first book because it was Colonial American romance — but all it takes is one agent, one publishing house.

3. Who are your favourite authors? and which book has meant the most for you?

I love Charles Dickens, JRR Tolkien, Mika Waltari, Kathleen Givens (who sadly passed on in 2010), Julie James, Norah Wilson, Marie Force, Kaki Warner, Monica McCarty, Jill Shalvis ... Lots of authors, actually!
The Lord of the Rings and A Tale of Two Cities are probably my top two favorite books. I also love Waltari’s The Egyptian, which I’ve read in a few langauges. (Same with Tale of Two Cities.)

"Me encantan Charles Dickens, JRR Tolkien, Mika Waltari, Kathleen Givens (quien desafortunadamente desapareció en 2010), Julie James, Norah Wilson, Marie Force, Kaki Warner, Monica McCarty, Jill Shalvis...

4. Do you find inspiration in music? If so, what type of music.

Oh, yes! I love music. I describe myself as a musicoholic. I listen to music most of the time when I write. If I’m writing a historical, I listen only to music from that culture or music that represents the story for me somehow — traditional Scottish folk music, classical music, soundtracks from movies. If I’m working on an I-Team story, then usually I’m listening to some kind of rock music or music that evokes the story. For example, the hero in STRIKING DISTANCE plays Spanish classical guitar, so I’ve been listening to a lot of that.
In general, I like post-grunge rock or alternative rock if I’m just listening to music.

5. "Extreme exposure" is one of your best sellers in Spain, but which one is your favourite title?

It’s hard to say which book is a favorite. I spend about a year writing each book, so I become very attached to the characters. Given that the I-Team books are all based on investigations I did as a journalist in real life, there’s something special in each of them for me. UNLAWFUL CONTACT focuses on an issue I was very involved with as a journalist — the treatment of women in US prisons — and that means a lot to me. So does NAKED EDGE because the people in the story represent real kinds of people I met reporting on the Navajo reservation. So they all have something special for me.

6. We would like to know more about your literary projects in the future, will you keep writing romance or is there any other genre you would like to cover?

I have a great interest in writing straight historical fiction (historical without the romance). One day I hope to do that. I also have a couple of thrillers (not romance) that I want to write some day in the Danish langauge based on things that happened there during World War II. I speak fluent Danish and lived there for a time. I hope to return in the not-too-distant future to do research for the first of these books.
I also have some interest in writing women’s contemporary fiction — more of a literary kind of writing without the emphasis on romance.
We’ll see what happens.

7. Any advice to new authors?
"¿Algún consejo a nuevos autores?"

The difference between authors who succeed and those who don’t is persistence. Don’t give up. Keep working. Keep learning. Tell the story that is in your heart, not the story that the market thinks you should write. If the story moves you deeply it is likely to touch your readers, too. And READ! That’s a writer’s life blood.

Y LEER! Esa es la sangre de un escritor."

Well, that´s all for now. Thank you very much for your time. I don´t know if you had the chance to come to Spain when you lived in Europe, but it would be a pleasure to have you here again.
Yes, I did! I visited Spain and LOVED it. In fact, when I reached Cadiz, I quit traveling and spent the rest of my travel time just staying there in Cadizaw parts of Madrid and Barcelona. I hope to return again. My idea of paradise would be spending winters in Spain and summers in Denmark. I hope I get to do that eventually!

Thank you so much for having me! I really appreciate it. I do like to hear from my readers, and although I don’t speak very good Spanish, we do a pretty good job of communicating thanks to translation programs. I hope everyon enjoys the release of SKIN DEEP.

    Buena entrevista!!!
