When did I decide to write my first novel?
"¿Cuándo decidió escribir su primera novela?"

I need to start by saying I was an advertising copywriter and then a retail advertising manager, so my work was constant writing. Then I decided to become my husband’s business partner in our small décor company, Perfect Fit. (Good company name for a romance writer?) And once I was away from writing for a job, two things happened.
1. I missed writing so much that I started plotting a novel.
2. I hurt my knee and had to stay in bed for seven days after an operation. What was I going to do? Write the book - longhand, resting the writing pad on my lap. By the end of seven days I’d almost finished the rough draft, and was totally hooked. It was a very bad book and will never see the light of day, but after that I was on fire.

What made you write romance?
"¿Qué le hizo escribir romántica?"

Although I read widely, it was always the love stories threaded through novels that captured my attention. It really didn’t occur to me to write anything but romance. It just felt right.

What was the process I had to follow in order to publish my first novel?

Long, and rather odd! It started by moving a computer desk out of the way of some curtains we were replacing. The customer said ‘I wish I could find someone who wants a desk.’ I told her I was starting to write novels, and she was thrilled for me to load it into our van and take it out of her way. My husband was equally thrilled because it meant he could give me his old computer and buy himself a new one.
By then I had several other stories in mind and I’d joined Romance Writers of New Zealand. I decided to target Harlequin Mills & Boon because they had such a huge chunk of the romance market. I sent off the required three chapters and synopsis, was asked for the rest of the book, and thought I’d achieved instant success. No – they liked my writing style, but the story wasn’t quite right for them. They sent revision suggestions. I re-wrote and re-sent. Still not quite what they were looking for. Could I try a different story please?
Thinking I must be getting close, I wrote a different one. (It takes MONTHS for three chapters to be read and evaluated, and months longer for the whole book to go through the process.) Time slipped by. Books were lost in the post, or the slush pile. One three-chapter partial hung around in their office for eighteen months before I heard anything. I sent more. My writing style was always admired and my stories were never quite what they wanted. While all this was going on I kept entering my finished books in an annual full-novel contest here in New Zealand and doing rather well.
At least these days you can email your submissions. When I started, you had to send the return postage or they wouldn’t reply. The final straw was when I sent a book to Entangled Publishing, had it accepted (yay!) and then had it turned down by a different editor there. That was towards the end of 2011, and I’d had enough.
Volví a reescribir y reenviar.

Who are your favourite authors?
"¿Quienes son sus autores favoritos?"

Above all others – Lisa Kleypas. I absolutely love her contemporary trio about the Travis family; ‘Sugar Daddy’, ‘Smooth Talking Stranger’ and ‘Blue-Eyed Devil’. I’m pretty sure they’ve been translated into Spanish. I always enjoy Rachel Gibson’s books, too. And let’s throw in a couple of Kiwis as well. Robyn Donald, world-famous for a hundred or so Mills & Boon novels in all sorts of languages - and Karina Bliss, a good friend and a great Harlequin Superromance writer.

Which book has meant the most to you?
"¿Qué obra ha significado más para usted?"

I come back to ‘Blue-Eyed Devil’ again and again. There’s a scene there that’s just so hot – and they’re in a concrete maintenance stairwell with the light flickering and the smell of dampness. Such an awful setting, yet she makes it amazing. And another where the heroine is in genuine danger of drowning in an elevator rapidly filling up with water. Totally romantic! If I could write like that I’d die happy.

Do you find inspiration in music?
"¿Encuentra inspiración en la música?"

No – I like silence while I write. If there has to be music it mustn’t have vocals – or I get distracted by the words and start bopping along. I’m a terrible singer…
"No.

Your future. Will you keep writing romance?
"¿En el futuro seguirá escribiendo romántica?"

Yes – absolutely – because I’m finally exactly where I want to be. Twelve books published, selling well, nice emails rolling in, and the first two novels translated into Spanish with at least two more to follow. Have a look at http://www.krispearson.es (or .com) to see all the covers.

What is your opinion about self-publishing?
"¿Qué opina de los autores auto publicados?"

It’s hard work, and it saved my sanity. I said earlier that by the end of 2011 I’d had enough of being encouraged and turned down, encouraged and turned down. A friend and I – both in the same situation – had books that had been through the mill, had won prizes, and deserved to see the light of day. We indie-published a couple each on Amazon. Wow – sold two overnight. Bigger wow – sold a dozen. Yee-ha! Sold more than 900 one day. And so, with a number of finished contest entries on hand, it was full steam ahead for final editing, cover design, blurb-writing and launching.
I have to say writing the books is the easy part. Pure joy. Promoting them is hard. Social media sucks up writing time. Advertising costs money you might not earn back. People who promise to review for you…don’t. It means so much for an author to have genuine book reviews, so always do it if you can. A whole industry has grown up around this.
My major promotional effort was making my best book free worldwide for a few weeks. More than a million copies were downloaded at the end of 2012, and that’s what started the others selling really well. This was ‘The Boat Builder’s Bed’ – now translated into Spanish as ‘La cama del constructor de barcos’.
HOWEVER I have to say there’s an enormous amount of rubbish being self-published now – just because people can, or because they’ve heard there’s money to be made. A bad book doesn’t lead to other sales. I have some very disappointed friends who expected overnight success that hasn’t eventuated. You should always click the cover and read the free sample if you’re tempted to buy something by a new author. You’ll pretty soon tell if they can write or not.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
"¿Algún consejo para nuevos autores?"

BICHOK! Yep – bum in chair, hands on keyboard. Write and write and write. Read and read and read. Join a proper writing organisation because that’s how you’ll get all the news and gossip about where to submit your work, who pays well, who doesn’t, and who’s looking for what.
Enter contests – you might not always enjoy what the anonymous judges put on the score-sheets, but if several of them say your settings are great and your dialogue is flat…well, you’ve learned something valuable.
Combine with a couple of writing friends and critique each other’s work. Not whole novels, but enough so you can comment fairly on the writing styles and give praise or constructive criticism. Be honest to your friends, and be open to their opinions in return. You are NOT the greatest writer in the world. Neither am I. We can all learn and improve.
Persist. If you’re a real writer you can’t help but write. Eavesdrop on conversations in cafes and buses. Soak up how people talk. Watch how they touch each other (or flinch away!) Look out for great settings. Start wondering ‘what could happen here?’ Keep lots of paper around for quick notes. I often scrawl things down while we’re driving to a job, or eating dinner, or getting ready for bed. My poor husband - I don’t think he minds too much though. Being married to a woman who writes sizzling romance has done wonders for his reputation.
Busca grandes escenarios. Empieza a preguntarte qué podría suceder ahí.

And on that note I’ll finish. Thank you again for inviting me, and I hope you enjoy the books.
